Tension in Kaduna as Thugs Attack NUJ Secretariat

From Ibrahim Dahiru Danfulani, Kaduna.

There was palpable tension in Kaduna as hundreds of political thugs allegedly sponsored by opponents of Senator Shehu Sani, attacked the Kaduna state secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), inflicting harm on some journalists and destroying their equipments. Already, a journalist soaked in blood, was rushed to a nearby hospital, while many recording gadgets and digital camera, were either smashed or stolen by the miscreants. Journalists who had converged on the NUJ for a press conference by Chieftains of a breakaway group of the APC in Kaduna, were heard accusing the DPO of Gabasawa Police station, of not doing much to stop the rampaging boys from gaining entry into the NUJ premises to cause commotion. The Press conference was abruptly stopped, while leaders of the APC AK’IDA such as Senators Shehu Sani, Suleiman Hunkuyi, governorship aspirant Isa Ashiru, Ambassador Sule Buba, Alhaji Yaro MAKAMA Rigachikun, Alhaji Tijjani Ramalan among others, had to be whisked to a safer place within the NUJ premises, for their lives. The chieftains had earlier, in their submissions at the news briefing, kicked against the actions of Governor Nasiru Ahmed el-Rufai, alleging that the recent exercise to name delegates, was a contraption that should be rejected. Some brave journalists had to save the situation by assisting the police to chase out more thugs who had defied police gun shots and attempted to launch a second attack on the NUJ. Although the situation was calm as at time of filing this report, fear still pervades the NUJ secretariat and its neighborhood, as some journalists were seen scaling the fence to run home for fear of another attack by the rampaging youths. The Kaduna NUJ officials were seen discussing in low tones, presumably on steps they would take to address such untoward situations in the future.
